Tour Detail

Days 1-2: Arrival
Arrival Bergamo via Milan

A dream comes true as your wide-bodied jet thunders off the airstrip: you're on your way to Italy! Time for a meal, a movie and a nap. Then it gets light again, first off the left-hand side of the airplane, then everywhere. It's morning, and Milan, Italy!

Continue to Bergamo, the birthplace of the 19th-century composer Donizetti, which is split in two parts. The Upper City is the original Bergamo, situated on a hill and still surrounded by its medieval walls. Major landmarks include the oldest communal palace in Italy, which dates back to the 12th century, the Basilica of St. Mary Major and the superb Colleoni Chapel, built in the 1470s as a mausoleum to the Condottiere Bartolomeo Colleoni. The Lower Town, spread out at the base of the hill, was an early experiment in town planning. In the 1920s, a new city was designed, with offices, shops and residential areas all neatly separated. Students of urban planning now come to Bergamo to examine the work of their predecessors.

Day 3: Walking Tour in Bergamo, Campanone o Torre Civica
Tour director-led walking tour in Bergamo

On a walking tour, your tour director will introduce you to Bergamo with it's Venetian walls, a UNESCO world heritage site which offers panoramic views of the Lombardy plain. Discover the contrast and the harmony between it's two halves, the medieval Città Alta (Upper Town) and the modern Città Bassa (Lower Town), a short ride on the historic funicular links the two.

In the upper town the cobbled streets lead to the Piazza Veccia and the Piazza Duomo, where you will find the Colleoni Chapel and the stunning Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore.

Round-trip Funicular ride in Bergamo

A funicular will take you up to the Old Town.

Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore

Located in the heart of Città Alta you will find the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, a masterpiece of romanesque architecture. Founded in the 12th century, it was built as a votive offering to the Virgin Mary to protect the city from plague. From the outside, its austere stone façade contrasts with the richly decorated interior, where Baroque opulence unfolds in intricate wood carvings, tapestries, and frescoes.

Campanone o Torre Civica

Located in the heart of Piazza Vecchia, take the lift up the Torre Civica for panoramic views over Bergamo Alta, the plains and surrounding hills.

Day 4: Excursion to Lake Maggiore and the Borromean Islands
Excursion to Lake Maggiore and the Borromean Islands
Sightseeing stop in Lake Maggiore region

Stop at the most idyllic of the Italian lakes, Lago Maggiore. You'll marvel at the surprising contrast of Alpine vistas and tropical vegetation as you travel along the shore of the deep blue lake.

Boat round-trip to the Borromean Islands

Enjoy a boat excursion to Lake Maggiore's Borromean Islands. You will stop first on Isola Bella then on the unspoiled Isola dei Pescatori, where visitors can browse through shops and boutiques.

Day 5: Travel to Verona, Verona Walking Tour
Travel to Verona

Travel to Verona, the city immortalized by Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet which is still surrounded by 16th-century walls enclosing its Centro della Città, full of little alleys and arcaded passageways.

Tour director-led walking tour in Verona

A walking tour will start at Piazza Bra, the vast square where the Roman amphitheater (known as the Arena di Verona) is located.

Roman Amphitheater

This splendid Roman amphitheater, which you will visit, dates back to the 1st century AD. It is among the largest in the world with its 44 tiers of seats.

View Juliet's House courtyard and balcony

Head to the courtyard of the Casa di giulietta to see its famous balcony and a bronze statue of Juliet.

Other landmarks include Piazza delle Erbe, site of the Roman forum, Ponte Scaligero, a bridge over the Adige River that has kept its ramparts and turrets, and Castelvecchio, the great castle built in the 1350s and from which the Scaligero family ruled the city.

Day 7: Venice Guided Walking Tour, Venetian Mask Workshop, Optional Evening Gondola Ride

Visit to St. Mark's Basilica

Enter the Basilica di San Marco, which dates back to the 11th century and houses precious treasures behind its elaborate façade.

Glass-blowing demonstration

Watch a glassblower in action to better appreciate the manufacture of the world-renowned Venetian glass.

The great Renaissance architect Palladio received in 1560 the first of his Venice commissions, all for ecclesiastical buildings: the Monastery of Santa Maria della Carita, which now houses the art collections of the Academy Gallery, the church of San Giorgio Maggiore, the Zitelle Church (Santa Maria della Presentazione), and the Church of Il Redentore, inspired by Rome's Pantheon and regarded as his Venetian masterpiece.

Venetian mask workshop (subject to availability)

Learn the art of the mask-maker from a Venetian expert! A long tradition of revelry has produced the uniquely Venetian masks, tricorn hats and black cloaks that are worn as costumes during Carnival. They derive from commedia dell'arte characters such as Pulcinella, Columbine, Pierrot and Pantaloon, which date back to the 16th century. Masks can be very simple (all white) or extremely ornate: follow your fancy as you decorate your very own Venetian mask! (This very popular workshop is subject to availability.)

Optional Evening Gondola Ride

This evening, enjoy a gondola ride beneath the open windows of stately palaces. A unique Venetian experience, as extravagant and as unforgettable as the city itself.

Day 8: Trento, Bolzano

Travel to Trento, one of the most photogenic cities in the mountainous Trentino province of Italy's South Tyrol.

Trento (Trent in English) is best known abroad as the host of the Council of Trent (1545-1563), a gathering of Roman Catholic prelates which launched the Counter Reformation and established the Tridentine Mass, the stndard Catholic Mass for nearly 400 years (1570-1962). Trentino was long ruled by Austria until it became part of Italy in 1919.

Tour Director-led Walking Tour

Explore Trento on a guided walking tour that begins in Piazza Duomo, the heart of the historic center. Here, you will see key landmarks including the Cathedral of San Vigilio, the Palazzo Pretorio, and the Fountain of Neptune. The tour continues to Piazza Cesare Battisti, where visitors have the option to view the Roman remains of Tridentum at the SASS underground archaeological site.

Stop in Mondsee, named after its beautiful Moon Lake, to see the Benedictine Abbey Church which provided the Baroque setting for the film's Von Trapp's wedding.
